Last Thursday Aplus Training were proud to sponsor the Apprenticeship Development award at this years Plymouth Herald Business Awards with the ceremony taking place at the Plymouth Pavillions. The award was to reflect the great work being done in and around Plymouth to develop fantastic apprenticeship oppurtunities for the future workforce. This year is a crucial year for businesses looking to take on or continue with Apprentices due to the Apprenticeship Levy introduced by the Government.
As last year, the event on Thursday was a fantastic affair and a great celebration of the truly amazing businesses Plymouth has to offer.

Aplus Training will have at the annual Skills South West show at Plymouth Pavillions on 1st and 2nd March. The Regional Skills Events are hugely interactive careers, jobs and skills events for young people. Since 2007 they’ve helped over 100,000 young people find out about careers, skills and learning options. The event will be split over two days and three sessions. On the 1st March the event will be open 9.30am-3pm and then again 5pm-7pm and again on 2nd March from 9.30am - 1pm. Follow this link to find out more.

The current 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, from August, will now be expanded to allow 19+ learners apply for tuition loans for course ranging from Level 3 to 6.
The Advanced Learner Loan is similar to those loans taken out by University students to fund their tuition. Like before, the loan will allow you to apply for varying amounts to suit the specific course fees in which you wish to enrol. There are no credit checks and household income is not taken into consideration and you do not have to start paying anything back until you are earning over £21,000.

Aplus Training, as part of the college, are helping to celebrate Exeter College being named the Top Provider of Apprenticeships at a recent event. The Times Educational Supplement Further Education Awards were recently held at the Grosvenor Hotel in London and Exeter College was presented with the award for Apprenticeship Programme of the Year.
The award comes as the College’s Business Solutions team and Aplus Training are continuing a very successful campaign to improve Apprenticeship Programmes and the experiences of both our students and those who employ them. Such campaigns have also been recognised nationally by Ofsted who rated the College as outstanding and at the 2015 Apprenticeships award where the College recieved the gold award.
Aplus Training are currently working with over 130 students and employer and will continue to strive for nothing but outstanding achievements in all areas!
A big congratulations to our AAT Level 2 learners in Exeter, who sat the PBKT exam yesterday, all of our learners passed and 43% exceeded in everything, which is a great achievement, the other 57% mainly exceeded - still a great result!

As of 1st October 2015, both new and existing apprentices in the UK will notice a sizeable increase in their hourly wage following the new National Minumum Wage (NMW) rates announced this week. Apprentices will have a 57p increase in their salary to £3.30 per hour making this a much larger increase than what was originally suggested by the Low Pay Commission (LPC) earlier in March 2015.
Of course this is still a minimum NMW rate for apprentices and many employers will want to pay more but it is evidence that apprentices are becoming much more valued within the working industry and that undertaking an apprenticeship is definitely a worthwhile and fantastic route to consider following full time education.

Many students are coming to the end of their accounting technician qualification and thinking about moving on to a chartered accountancy qualification. Those in industry and management accountancy, who are thinking about the Chartered Institute of Management Accountancy (CIMA) path, need to know about the major changes being made to the CIMA syllabus starting from 1st January 2015.
Traditionally chartered accountancy exams have been 3 hours of hand written graft followed by a two month wait for results as exams are all human marked. CIMA has departed from this approach as most of its exams will, in future, be 90 minutes, undertaken on a computer, and with instant provisional results. Furthermore candidates will no longer have to wait for the bi-annual main exam sittings but can book exams on demand at a nearby centre.
Under the old syllabus there were 3 levels (imaginatively called levels 1, 2 & 3) of 3 exams each (Financial Accounting (F), Management Accounting and Performance (P) and Enterprise Strategy (E)). Each of these was three hours long (with 20 minutes pre-reading time) with answers handwritten – can anyone write for 3 hours non-stop these days without getting a sprained wrist and a dent in the finger? - and culminated in a final case study that tested in one place everything learned in the preceding 9 exams (T4). From 1st January 2015, the 3 exams (E, F & P) at each level (1, 2 & 3) broadly remain but will be 90 minutes long, comprise short form and multiple choice questions and computer marked there and then. They can be sat in a variety of locations near our main centres of Exeter and Plymouth.
What’s not to like, you may be thinking at this stage? Well now for the less good news. The breadth and depth of the knowledge required for each exam has not changed - students will have to know just as much. On top of that, the pass mark will rise from 50% to 70% to reflect the fact that it is generally easier to answer 1 and 2 mark short form and multiple choice questions than it is to construct an answer to a 25 mark question. Also two new 3 hour handwritten case studies have been slotted in at the end of the level 2 and 3 exams, presumably to maintain rigour in the qualification because they are perceived to enhance practical application of acquired knowledge. So instead of 9 exams and a case study, would be chartered management accountants must successfully negotiate 9 exams and 3 case studies.
CIMA have gone some way to updating the way its accountancy qualifications are examined and administered without, it will hope, appearing to have “dumbed down” the qualification in a way that would reduce its esteem with employers.
At Aplus training we have revamped our CIMA tutoring approach to take advantage of the new flexibilities. Students used to sit exams two at a time twice a year spending 8 days in the classroom in April and October – away from their offices often at their busiest times.We have established a programme, delivered by tutors with years of industry, practice and teaching experience in which students will sit exams one at a time on four separate occasions in the year studying with us in eight two day bursts dotted throughout. In this way it will still be possible to qualify in 3 years and, with pass rates in excess of 80%, Aplus are the right people to rely on to help get you there.

We would like to congratulate Otter Brewery on winning our sponsored Best Creative Business award at this year’s Express and Echo Business Awards 2014. In attendance from Aplus training at Sandy Park, Exeter on Friday 4th April were members of our Senior Management Team including Tracey Lawes, Managing Director and Alan Douglas, Chairperson of the Board who were able to announce the winners and give the award personally to the Otter Brewery representatives (pictured). It was a brilliant evening enjoyed by all and was lovely to see all the winners of this year’s awards.
Aplus training are also sponsoring the Apprenticeship Development Award at the Herald Business Awards 2014 in Plymouth; the ceremony will be held on Thursday 1st May.
Starting in January 2015, CIMA move to a new syllabus. The three pillars (enterprise, performance and finance) remain as do the three levels (1 - operations, 2 – management and 3 – strategy) but a new case study testing the whole level E, F and Phas been added at levels 1 and 2. This case study will need to be passed to move on to the next level.
In future the exams will be 90 minutes, computerised and taken on demand with instant results. The case studies will be 3 hours and human marked.
Transition arrangements are sketchy but my take is as follows:
any passes currentlyheld will be carried into the new syllabus
any passes achieved this year will be carried forwards into the new syllabus
if you clear a level before Jan 2015, you will
move up to the next level without taking the case study
there looks like there may be one re-sit opportunity in Feb 2015 to still clear a level without taking the case study
The advice to students is basically to carry on as before but if you can clear the whole of level 1 or 2 in the November 2014
sitting, it would save you the extra case study. Many of our students are sitting E1 and P1 in May and will do F1 in November so are well positioned. Those who are doing just E1 or P1 in May 2014 are recommended to do the other two level 1’s in November. We will look to run all three level 1 courses for the November 2014 sitting to help with this.
