THE South West’s largest independent training provider, specialising in accountancy, has appointed three new directors.
Accountancy Plus Training Ltd (A+) are based in Plymouth but also deliver courses in Bideford, Exeter, Fraddon, Torquay and Taunton and offer distance learning nationally. They were recently awarded the new Training Quality Standard (TQS) - a certification of training excellence for providers designed to recognise and celebrate the best organisations delivering training to employers - and were the first and currently the only provider in the country to be singled out for "excellence in accounting."
The new directors have been appointed as part of a continuing programme to ensure the maintenance of these high standards as well as reaching even higher levels of excellence in the service provided to both learners and employers.
Managing director Simon Deane said: "Many of those who run small businesses will know the problems of trying to work on the business whilst still needing to spend much of one's time working in it. The appointment of three further directors from the current senior management team allows us to spread this load and also access the enthusiasm and knowledge of a team who have a solid knowledge of the real business.
"Any training business is dependent on keeping its key trainers in the front line of training, even when they have a management role. The increased team will help us achieve this".
His wife, Prue, becomes the new Operations Director and has herself re-trained for a change of career on more than one occasion so says she feels she has a particular understanding of those seeking new or improved qualifications.
After fulfilling a dream to complete a degree in graphic design in London and becoming a freelance illustrator, she later returned to the Westcountry and in 1998 joined A+ as a trainee assessor. She obtained her Accounting Technician qualifications (AAT) and an MSc in Educational Research at Exeter University and learned to teach the AAT programme.
"I know exactly what it is like to have to learn and feel that gives me a real empathy with the students" she said.
She became Learning Development Manager and now takes responsibility for overseeing and liaising with all the departments within the company.
Paul O’Connell, who has been involved in training since 1991, is a qualified Account Technician and has been with A+ since 2001 as a tutor and assessor, he is appointed Quality and Communications Director. Born and bred in Plymouth, he studied at St Boniface College and Cardiff University.
He said: "There are numerous funding opportunities for employers and learners to help them improve skills and one of my roles will be to get that message out there so that they can take advantage of them. "I shall also be seeking to uphold and build on the previous strengths of the company. We have an excellent reputation for the quality of training we provide."
The third new appointment is Sally Antrobus, a chartered accountant who becomes Financial Director. Sally joined A+ through their Taunton centre but moved to Plymouth with her husband and their two daughters, now aged six and three, three years ago.
In August last year she took over the role as financial controller which she continues to combine with her commitments as a tutor and assessor even though she only works part time.
"I am really enjoying this new responsibility." she said. "It means working long hours and fitting everything around the family but it is extremely rewarding."
A+ have over 500 learners with more than half taking apprenticeships in accountancy but they also offer courses on other office skills including book-keeping and IT.
They were involved in the DfES Standards Unit projects on differentiation and e-learning and have assisted them in the development of the related learning materials.
