Skills for Life (SfL)

Are you or any of your staff having problems with your Maths/English, or have you simply forgotten what you learnt at school and would like the ability to "brush up"?  Well, you are not alone, and the Government has now recognised this.  In a recent survey, they determined that millions of people are below level 2 (GCSE grade A to C equivilent) for literacy and numeracy.

Accountancy Plus Training (A+) delivers refresher training in Maths and English under a programme known as Skills for Life (SfL).

It is an ideal package to refresh areas that may not have been visited since your school days.  Learners can brush up on working out percentages, problem solving, punctuation, grammar, and other skills that may not have been used for some time.

What is covered?

A learner will first complete an initial assessment.  This will indicate his/her current level so that a tutor or assessor can determine a learning plan.  One-to-one training can be provided if required.  Otherwise, learners will be given access to a whole host of resources to enable them to learn, practise, and improve their skills.  Once the learner is ready, he/she can do an online test in the workplace.  The result is immediately available from the tutor and certification takes place within 10 days.

What is the title of the qualification?

Certificate in Adult Literacy (level 1 or 2)

Certificate in Adult Numeracy (level 1 or 2)

How long does the process take from start to completion?

This very much depends on how much training is required.  Typically though, a module (i.e. literacy or numeracy), takes about 3-4 weeks.  Once ready for the test, learners are able to take it on demand.  The training is organised to spend time in the areas which you feel less comfortable with, rather than those you're good at.

Do I need to do the tests if I have GCSE English and Maths?

The whole emphasis is on the course being a refresher, so it is designed for anybody who needs a top-up or reminder of how to do something that they haven't done for years.  We have even had graduates undertaking the training.

Who will know the results of my tests?

Test results are confidential, so only you and the tutor will know the results, though you may wish to share your improvement/success with your employer and/or your colleagues.

What benefits will I gain from completing the qualification?

It is meant as a refresher and to that end it seeks to rediscover some "lost" skills, perhaps add some new ones, and generally give more confidence in the activities you may have to undertake at work and at home.

Where is it delivered?

Because we are aware that we need to be addressing an individual's needs, it is usually delivered by our tutor/assessor coming into the workplace to see learners on a one-to-one basis.  Many learners prefer to access learning support via email.  Support from our tutor will be in the form of setting practice activities and feeding back on progress in preparation for the in preparation for the online tests.  They will also direct you to the suitable online learning resources and practical activities.

When can I start?

With the personalised online training, learners can enrol at any time of the year.  The online tests are "on-demand", so can be arranged to suit a learner's study progress and work commitments.

How much does it cost?

As A+ is able to obtain LSC funding, there is no cost involved for eligible learners or their employers.

What criteria must I meet?

You must be employed and working a minimum of 16 hours per week (or carryout voluntary work for more than 3 hours per week).
