The Balancing Act - A Bookkeeping Self-Study Programme

The Balancing Act is a training programme designed to ensure you obtain a sound knowledge of, and the practical skills in, bookkeeping.

It is delivered through a mix of:
- traditional paper based learning using a comprehensive case study, Paperchase Wizard Ltd.
- on-line interactive learning using 18 interactive training modules, relating question banks and a revision phase.

For each area of learning you:
1. Acquire the knowledge - using the on-line interactive training programme
2. Test that knowledge - using the on-line question banks
3. Apply that knowledge - using the case study activities in Paperchase

The Balancing Act workbook is suited to new recruits or existing staff looking to expand their finance role.
Training can take place at any time, on or off an employer's premises, and can remove the need for an expensive taught bookkeeping course. A number of our clients use it as their staff's "1st job", prior to letting them loose on the real thing!

How much will it cost?

The Balancing Act Self Study Course costs £150 and includes a workbook and online learning materials.

A proven approach

The Balancing Act workbook contains 42 separate paper-based activities following a single case study
(Paperchase Wizard Limited) from processing orders to preparing a balance sheet. All are cross-referenced
to 18 on-line learning modules.

For each activity, learners follow the simple learning process:

  • Acquire the required knowledge – from the on-line training programme
  • Test that knowledge - using our on-line question banks
  • Apply that knowledge – using the Paperchase Wizard activities

Also, those that wish to can sit the free AAT on-line mock exam and/or take the actual AAT Book-keeping Certificate on-line exam.

Traditional paper-based training

Our comprehensive ring binder of book-keeping activities will guide your new recruits through every step of practical book-keeping so they can go easily from:

  • Orders
  • To invoices
  • To day books
  • To ledgers
  • To trial balance
  • To profit and loss account
  • To balance sheet

And all the bits in between..!

On-line interactive training

How the on-line element of The Balancing Act is delivered:

This is delivered via our ‘Moodle’ Virtual Learning Environment. This is available on-line 24 hours a day.

Learners will be issued a Username and Password when they enrol, which will allow them to access the site. Each of the 42 paper-based activies is crossreferenced with 18 on-line interactive modules.

Within the on-line site, learners will find:

  • The interactive book-keeping learning programme.
  • Additional Question Banks developed by A+ to provide further support to test their learning.

Within this programme there is a Reporting function that allows employers to monitor learners’ progress in the self test questions and their usage of the system.

What is covered?

The on-line interactive training programme has been split into three units for ease of learning.

  • Introduction to book-keeping
  • Accounting adjustments
  • Practical book-keeping and final accounts
Introduction to Bookkeeping
This unit covers the double entry recording of transactions up to trial balance, and the production of the profit and loss account and balance sheet from the trial balance.

Traditional T-accounts are used, as well as journal entries in a typical computer format.
No previous knowledge of accounting is required. By the end of “Introduction to bookkeeping”, you will have learned to record transactions in double entry terms, extract a trial balance and prepare a simple set of accounts for a sole trader.

Accounting Adjustments
This unit covers specific double entry techniques using the knowledge of double entry learned in the 'Introduction to bookkeeping' unit.

Topics such as accruals and prepayments, fixed assets and depreciation, leasing, loans, and hire purchase are all dealt with within this unit.By the end of 'Accounting adjustments', you will have learned how to process most types of common transactions and adjustments and be able to produce a more complex set of accounts for a sole trader.

Practical Bookkeeping and Final Accounts

This unit covers the recording of transactions in the primary records of businesses, and the posting of the ledgers from the books of original entry.

The final module looks at the financial statements of different types of businesses — clubs and societies, partnerships and limited companies. By the end of this unit, you will be familiar with the more practical aspects of day-to-day bookkeeping and the contents and format of the final accounts of different types of organisation.

Progress Monitoring
You can monitor the progress of your new recruits as our software provides instantaneous, detailed information on their learning allowing you to monitor progress on-line before they join you.

Flexible Blended Delivery
The flexible methods of delivery and automated marking of the tests in the on-line lessons greatly enhance training and learning. This is enhanced by the ability to apply that learning to a
comprehensive series of traditional paper-based bookkeeping activities, for which answers are also supplied.

How long will it take to complete the course?
There are no time restrictions and learners are encouraged to progress at their own pace. The time spent will depend on individual circumstances, including time available for online access and individual experience. On average it is anticipated that it will take around a week to complete The Balancing Act programme in full on a self-study basis. If you can only put in one evening a week of 2 hours, this will equate to 18 weeks (i.e. 1 module per week).
